Prior to\u00a0the beginning of the war in 1939, Britain imported tens of millions of pounds of foodstuffs. With shipping lanes and supplies cut off due to enemy\u00a0attacks, rationing began in Britain in January, 1940. By rationing food, the British government&#8217;s Ministry of Food would make sure that all Britons got their fair share. With its introduction, rationing created a new culture of cooking and eating.
