It was used as a thickener in soups, used to make mock meats (oatmeal &#8220;sausages&#8221;) and of course as a breakfast food. The Kitchen Front from the Ministry of Food said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"S8\"><span id=\"lc2\" class=\"displayFix\">OATMEAL IN WARTIME<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"S8\"><span id=\"lc3\" class=\"displayFix\">Most of us, because of rationing, are\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"lc4\" class=\"displayFix\">eating less butter, and consequently we\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"lc5\" class=\"displayFix\">should make the best use of foods rich\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"lc6\" class=\"displayFix\">in vitamins A and D and foods con<\/span><span id=\"lc7\" class=\"displayFix hovered\">taining natural fats.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"lc8\" class=\"displayFix\">Oatmeal, of all cereals, contains the\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"lc9\" class=\"displayFix\">most fat and is the best energising\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"lc10\" class=\"displayFix\">food. Here is an oatmeal recipe :\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 quart Water or Pot Liquor (liquid from boiled greens)<\/li>\n<li>1 chopped Apple or 2 tablespoons Fruit Pulp if available<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoons oatmeal<\/li>\n<li>1 large Potato, chopped<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp\u00a0Curry Powder<\/li>\n<li>1 large Carrot, chopped<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd pint Milk<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd Swede (rutabaga) \u00a0or 1 Turnip, chopped<\/li>\n<li>Salt &amp; Pepper<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoons Parsley<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sprinkle the oatmeal into the boiling water or pot liquor and allow to boil for 5 minutes, stirring all the time. Add the salt, prepared fruit and vegetables (sliced or cut into small pieces) and the currypowder mixed with 2 tablespoons water. Allow to cook steadily for \u00be to 1 hour. When cooked, add the milk and pepper and reheat.
