With the implementation of the &#8220;Dig for Victory&#8221; campaign, carrots were one of the important foods that helped win the war. Housewives had the great \u00a0experience of preparing such culinary delights as Carrot Biscuits (cookies), Carrot Marmalade (the shredded carrots looked like and served as mock orange peel), carrot on a stick (advertised to children &#8220;as good as a lollipop&#8221;)\u00a0and carrot juice drinks from recipes found in the Ministry\u2019s \u201cWar Cookery Leaflet 4.\u2033 As sugar was rationed, carrots were also used as a sweetener in\u00a0baked goods.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thewartimekitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wcl4b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-91\" src=\"https:\/\/thewartimekitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wcl4b.jpg\" alt=\"wcl4b\" width=\"300\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b>When the Ministry of Food was faced with a bumper crop of carrots in 1941, \u00a0they used various forms of media to inform the\u00a0British public that eating carrots would help them see better during the war-imposed\u00a0blackouts. &#8220;Dr. Carrot&#8221; was created as a symbol to remind people to eat more vegetables and help reduce the surplus carrot crop. \u00a0Posters with the slogan \u201cCarrots keep you healthy and help you see in the blackout\u201d \u00a0were plastered throughout the country.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thewartimekitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/carrots-nightsight-advert-6111.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-90\" src=\"https:\/\/thewartimekitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/carrots-nightsight-advert-6111-244x300.jpg\" alt=\"carrots-nightsight-advert-6111\" width=\"244\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thewartimekitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/carrots-nightsight-advert-6111-244x300.jpg 244w, https:\/\/thewartimekitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/carrots-nightsight-advert-6111.jpg 497w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b><i>Isn&#8217;t an hour in the garden better than an hour in the queue?&#8221; <\/i><\/b><i>(Lord Woolton, Minister of Food, 1941)<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since meat was rationed, vegetables became an important staple of the wartime diet.
